3 Hours Before Flight Time
Welcome to friendly Bulgaria! Arrive at Sofia Airport. There you’ll be met and greeted by your tour guide. Transfer to your hotel for check-in. In the afternoon, go for a walking tour of the Boyana Church with amazing Medieval art frescoes, the stunning Roman ruins and the Medieval settlements. Stay in Sofia overnight.
Today, make your way to the impressive Iskar River Gorge. Located between the town of Novi Iskar and Lyutibrod Village, the massive Iskar River Gorge crosses the Balkans. Visit the beautiful Lakatnik Cliffs and the Seven Altars Monastery, also known as Osenovlashki Monastery on the border of Vratsa province. Founded in the 11th century, the Seven Altars Monastery has been a cultural and educational center over the centuries. Move on to Vratsa, a quiet town in the foothills of the Balkans and stay there for the night.
Today youll visit the Saeva Dupka Cave. The cave is comprised of 400m of magnificent halls and corridors. Many choral music performances have taken place here owing to the excellent acoustics. Afterwards, head to the highest monastery in the country – the Glozhen monastery, situated in the Tetevenska Mountain. The terrace of the monastery boasts incredible views of the Balkan Mountains. Finally, head to Troyan, where you’ll stay for the night.
Early in the morning, set off for the Devetashka Cave, one of the most beautiful natural places in Bulgaria. Before reaching Veliko Tarnovo you’ll stop at the 4th biggest monastery in Bulgaria, Preobrazhenski Monastery. After lunch, continue to Veliko Tarnovo. Tour the medieval capital including the imposing Tsarevets Fortress and the interesting Samovodska street. Stay in Veliko Tarnovo for the night.
After a morning walk in Arbanassi, continue to the Ivanovo Rock Monastery, which consists of a network of small churches and chapels. Afterward, head to the Sborianovo Archaeological Reserve near the town of Sveshtari. Take a city tour and discover the rich Thracian heritage. Spend the night in Shumen.
From Shumen, continue to the Madara National Historical-Archeological Reserve and gaze at the interesting Madara Horseman, an early medieval large rock relief carved on a 100-m high cliff. Later, on your way to the Aladzha Monastery, stop at the Port of Varna, one of Bulgaria’s most popular Black Sea resorts, famous for Thracian gold findings. Following the coastal road up north, reach the town of Balchik, another cool Black Sea resort. Visit the Summer Palace of Queen Marie with its pretty Botanical Gardens. Stay in Balchik overnight.
Begin the day with a visit to the Old Town of Nessebar with its 40 churches discovered on the territory of the city. Continue to your next destination, charming Zheravna. The whole village consists of restored houses, keeping exquisite examples of wood-carved interiors. Zheravna was a cultural and handicraft center in the 18th century. Stay in Zheravna for the night.
From Zheravna, head south to the Rhodope Mountains. Here, you’ll tour Stara Zagora and the Museum of Religions. Stara Zagora is known for its wealth of Roman constructions. Enjoy strolling along the city walls, and visiting the antique forum, Roman streets and buildings, Roman baths, mosaics, and a Thracian tomb. Proceed to Karzhali for your overnight stay.
Embark on an intriguing tour of Kardzhali and Shiroka Laka. See gorgeous landscapes like the Stone Wedding, a stunning rock landscape near Kardzhali, and enjoy the proclaimed architectural and folklore reserve at Shiroka Laka, located right in the central Rhodope Mountains.
Today, head to Bachkovo Monastery, the second biggest monastery in Bulgaria. Later, continue driving further north to reach the cultural capital of Bulgaria an aboslute must – Plovdiv. Take a tour aound the Old Town, which features a rich mix of Roman-Bulgarian architectural and historical sights spread across three hills: Nebet Tepe, Dzhambaz Tepe and Taksim Tepe. Do not miss the Ancient Theater of Philippopolis! Stay in Plovdiv for the night.
From Plovdiv, continue to the historical town of Koprivshtitsa, which still preserves the atmosphere of the 19th century Revival Period. Enjoy the tranquil atmosphere as you stroll around the cobblestone streets and admire the traditional wooden houses. Stay in Koprivshtitsa for the night.
Today, return to Sofia. Depending on the departure time of your flight, enjoy some free time to relax or some last-minute shopping. Transfer to Sofia International Airport in time for your departure flight. We wish you a safe flight, and please visit again soon!
